Movie Mondays!




While James Nesbitt may not be familiar to American viewers, he is an absolute revelation in this re-imaging of the classic Jekyll/Hyde tale. I reserved this out of curiosity more than anything else and was extremely and pleasantly surprised. The series entails only six episodes spread across two dvds but, it’s incredible bang for the buck. The lead character portrayed by Nesbitt (Jekyll) has taken to leading a strange if troubling double life, forcing him to isolate himself from those he loves. It opens with him hiring a woman to accommodate the demands of both him and his alter ego. The woman (portrayed by Michelle Ryan the lead in NBCs recent Bionic Woman) finds herself drawn in by the gentlemanly Jekyll. However, as the story progresses it becomes apparent that not everyone around Jekyll has his best interests at heart and friend may really be foe. The question is whether or not Jekyll can come to an understand with his darker half and in the process overcome those forces arrayed against him. It’s a highly entertaining series that actually left me wanting more - I’m not sure if the BBC plans to revisit this property somewhere down the road but, I hope they do. Even I wasn’t expecting the reveal at the very end. Good acting and pacing all-around make this a highly enjoyable watch!
